1. Check the edge of the card

Touch and feel the edges of your actual driver’s license. You’ll notice that it’s smooth with rounded corners. This is because your ID is laser cut.

The edges of a fake ID may be rough or have very few threads. These are signs of hand cutting or machine cutting, these are all fake.

2. Check the laminate

Laminating on hard plastic is difficult to get done correctly. Fake IDs have come along way since the days where it’d just be glue-on laminate, but that doesn’t mean laminate is perfect.

Laminate is virtually unnoticeable on your real ID, except for a slight sheen. It ends at the end of the card, but if you look closely at the edge of the card, you can see two or three layers: laminate, cardstock, and possibly another layer of laminate.

On fake IDs, however, the laminate often doesn’t stick well. The laminate has wrinkles or dirt underneath, especially around the edges, and it will often stick out a little beyond the edge, which you can see if you flash a light on the edge directly.

But even if the laminate is applied correctly, it can be difficult for counterfeit ID manufacturers to obtain the same type of laminate as genuine ID manufacturers. They use substitutes, but these substitutes are usually too reflective. You can see this extreme reflectivity on fake IDs.

On a real ID, certain parts have raised and indented fonts. Let’s take the example of the Massachusetts REAL ID card, where my date of birth in the lower right corner is raised, while below the photo the cardholder’s initials and year of birth are indented.

Doing this is difficult and expensive. Cheaper ID manufacturers may try to cheat it, especially with indented letters, by making this step as easy as possible so that the letters line up with the rest of the card stock. If you touch it carefully you can feel it.

Creating colorful, raised fonts is especially difficult. Fake ID makers have trouble coloring the letters completely, leaving inferior spots on the numbers.

Check the hologram

Holograms were once a top security feature on ID cards. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case, and most good fake ID manufacturers today have no problem with holograms.

However, they still pay a price in hologram quality. For example, on a Massachusetts driver’s license, there is a hologram of a bird. It had a few features that would be difficult for fake ID makers to replicate: a small eye, a small word “Massachusetts,” and my initials and birth year embedded within it.

Currently, fake ID manufacturers are in the business of producing fake IDs that are compelling enough for teenagers under the age of 21 to fool overworked bar bouncers.

Generally, when spotting an ID card, they will check the front of the ID card very carefully and then briefly take a look at the back.

Fake ID makers know this, so they often leave out a lot of the details of the letters on the back. Therefore, the letters on the back of some bad fake ID cards may be misplaced, spotted, or joined together.

To create clean, well-aligned holes requires an expensive laser, which is not something inferior fake ID manufacturers have. So they try their best to use machine stamping, which nonetheless results in holes that are poorly aligned, vary in size, and look messy or a little scarred.

Do you remember when you took a picture of your driver’s license? They have you stand in front of a blank background with strong, direct light shining on your face then they take a high-quality photo.

However, people tend to take photos of fake IDs differently. They usually just let their friends take pictures with their phones in front of a blank wall. The fake ID maker then composites the photo onto the ID card.

Therefore, in fake ID photos, there may be traces of Photoshop, such as around the edges of the hair, and the photo may be of poor quality or blurry.
